SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Those used to smiles on cardboard boxes may be happy to know that Amazon is building a new facility in San Angelo. From faster delivery times to new employment opportunities, here's what we know about the upcoming Amazon station.

According to the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Amazon plans to open a new delivery station in the city in 2024. The facility, which is expected to span 32,800 square feet, is currently being constructed off of State Loop 306 at the intersection of Venture Drive and Gateway Drive.

The arrival of the delivery station comes as the result of a partnership between the e-commerce titan, the City of San Angelo and the Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Brenda Gunter stated that the facility will advance "the strategic economic development logistics program of 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' that connects the San Angelo economy to global manufacturing and trade."

"I am pleased to announce completion of the negotiations for the construction of Amazon’s last-mile facility in San Angelo," Michael Looney, the Chamber of Commerce's vice president of economic development, said. "A deal of this complexity has required the precise orchestration of our partners from both Amazon and their development team. We are excited to get started."

The facility is expected to hasten Amazon's package delivery times in the region by establishing a direct link between San Angelo and the company's fulfillment and sortation centers. Those who work customer fulfillment and transportation jobs at delivery stations typically earn between $17 and $28 an hour.

“This last-mile facility will allow us to better serve customers in San Angelo and the surrounding area,” Jessica Breaux, senior manager of economic development for Amazon, said.

Concho Valley Homepage has contacted Amazon's public relations department for information regarding how many jobs the facility is expected to bring to San Angelo, but no communications were received prior to publication.

According to Amazon, the company has created more than 89,000 full- and part-time jobs in Texas and invested more than $54 billion across the state since 2010. These investments have contributed an additional $59 billion to the Texas economy and have helped create more than 166,600 indirect jobs on top of Amazon’s direct hires. 38,000 independent sellers have also taken to Amazon's online store to sell their products, creating jobs across the state.

"On behalf of the members of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce and board of directors, I am pleased to welcome Amazon to San Angelo and commend them on their strategic investment in West Texas," Walt Koenig, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, said.
