SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The last of the 14 dogs scheduled for euthanasia on May 7 following animal shelter overcrowding were saved less than an hour before their deadline.

News first broke about the 14-dog euthanasia list on May 1, when the City of San Angelo announced that the shelter pets would have to be put down if not adopted by 3 p.m. on May 4. The scheduled euthanizations were to keep the San Angelo Animal Shelter, which was holding 192 dogs at the time, under its legal 180-dog maximum capacity.

The list would sit at 9 dogs as of the morning of May 4, potentially spelling the end for some of the pups. However, the deadline was extended that same day to 7 p.m. on May 7 after severe weather shook the Concho Valley, preventing potential adopters from reaching the shelter.

Though the number would continue to be whittled down during the new days afforded by the deadline extension, Concho Valley PAWS reported that 3 dogs — Bomba, Tofu and Barnie — still needed to be adopted or fostered just before 6 p.m. on May 7.

With only one hour left to live, the dogs needed the people of San Angelo to pull through for them if they were ever going to get a second lease on life. Luckily for them, just enough hearts and homes were open for the pets.

"I just wanted to give y'all a great update that every single e-list dog was either fostered or adopted today!" a CVPAWS member said in a live Facebook announcement. "We thank y'all so much for what you did today. It was a true miracle!"

CVPAWS' work isn't over, however. The nonprofit urged San Angelo residents to continue adopting and fostering shelter pets to curb shelter overcrowding and prevent future euthanasia lists.

"We couldn't do this without y'all, but it does not stop there," a CVPAWS member said during the Facebook announcement. "In order to avoid an e-list in the future, we need more adopters. Please consider opening up your arms, your home, your family to a shelter dog in need."
