SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The San Angelo Police Department has announced that one of its detectives who was arrested over the Fourth of July holiday for driving while intoxicated has since resigned from his role.

According to a release issued by the SAPD, James Hernandez resigned from his position as a police detective on Monday, July 8, just four days after he was arrested.

The arrest occurred during a traffic stop conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety on July 4, during which probable cause was found for Hernandez being intoxicated. He was taken into custody and charged with "Driving While Intoxicated 2nd.” He was off-duty at the time of the arrest.

The incident prompted SAPD Police Chief Travis Griffith to hold a press conference the following morning. During the conference, Griffith stated that Hernandez would be afforded due process under the law and would not be given deferential treatment.

“I just want to address this: Just like anybody else, there’s no difference between a citizen versus one of our personnel, that everyone is afforded due process under the law and that they’re innocent until proven guilty through that process,” Griffith said.

The SAPD also launched an investigation and immediate internal review into the incident. Hernandez would resign in the days that followed, putting an end to his 17-year career in the department.

"The San Angelo Police Department takes such matters very seriously, and the actions of one officer do not reflect the values or conduct of the department or its other officers," the SAPD said. "The department remains committed to transparency and accountability."
