Description

SAN ANGELO, Texas (KLST/KSAN) — A 17-year-old from San Angelo died on June 4 just over a week after being fatally injured during a crash in Tom Green County involving three other people.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred on May 24 at 4:30 p.m. on United States Highway 67 by Preacher Road. The road was dry, and the weather was clear.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the department indicated that the driver of a 2023 Dodge 2500 truck was traveling south on U.S. 67. The driver of a 2010 Ford Escape was stopped in front of the truck and waiting for oncoming traffic to pass so that it could turn left onto Preacher Road.

According to TxDPS, the truck driver failed to control his speed "due to a distraction in the vehicle," causing the truck to strike the car. Both vehicles then skidded into a ditch to the east. The truck crossed the east ditch and collided with a fence before coming to an upright rest facing east, while the car spun to the left and came to an upright rest facing northeast in the ditch.

The driver of the Dodge was transported to Shannon Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Escape was also taken to Shannon for serious injuries along with a 16-year-old passenger, who had minor injuries.

The 17-year-old, also a passenger of the Escape, was transported via AirMed1 to Shannon Medical Center before being taken to Lubbock's University Medical Center due to the extent and severity of his injuries. It was then reported that the individual was pronounced dead at the hospital on June 4 at 7:49 p.m.
