SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The City of Sonora has issued a scam alert after receiving reports of an individual posing as a payment collection agent for a West Texas-based gas company.

According to the City, the individual "has been reported to be knocking on houses pretending to be with West Texas Gas collecting monthly payments for services."

West Texas Gas is a gas company headquartered in Midland, Texas. It operates a location within Sonora at 2004 N. Crockett Ave.

The City stated that the gas company "does not send out any representatives to collect payments without direct approval from West Texas Gas to homeowners/Customers and to West Texas Gas Field Tech Johnny Bristow."

The City asks anyone who grows suspicious of an individual claiming to be a West Texas Gas employee seeking to collect a payment to call the company at (325)-446-2555.

"Always ask for credentials of anyone stating they represent a company or organization," the City said.

The City also said it requires those who wish to solicit within the town to have a solicitation permit. It encourages residents to ask whether a solicitor has a permit and to contact the Sonora Police Department at (325)-387-3888 if the solicitor does not have a permit available.
