#5 Ranked Angelo State Rams Continue Dominance by Rolling LSC Foe UTPB

MIDLAND, TX – The fifth-ranked Angelo State football team opened Lone Star Conference action on Saturday, defeating UT Permian Basin on the road at Grande Communication Stadium. With the win, the Rams improve to 3-0 on the season while the Falcons move to 1-2 overall on the year.

 

According to Angelo Sports, ASU's defense was the first to break the score as Andrew Pitts returned an interception 41-yards for the first score of the game. The Rams extended their lead to 14 points later in the first quarter as Zach Bronkhorst connected with Cason Brown to take the ball to UTPB's one-yard line before Nate Omayebu III punched it in for a touchdown.

 

Asa Fuller began the second quarter with a field goal, hitting from 21-yards out to make it 17-0 in favor of the Rams.

 

In the very next possession by the Falcons, Micah Flowers intercepted the ball after it was tipped at the line of scrimmage, setting up another touchdown for the Rams as Bronkhorst hit Omayebu for a 12-yard pass to the end zone.

 

Omayebu finished with two touchdowns in the game while running for 130 yards on 26 carries and 41 yards receiving.

 

UTPB finally got on the board with 7:49 to play in the first half, driving 62-yards on seven plays before running it in for a touchdown to make it 24-7.

 

In the second half, the Falcons added another score, hitting a play-action pass for 76-yards and a score to cut the lead to only 10 points. They answered again later in the quarter, completing a 70-yard touchdown pass for 21 unanswered points.

 

With 8:33 to go in the game, the Rams broke UTPB's scoring streak as Fuller nailed a 46-yard field goal to give the Rams a 27-21 lead.

 

ASU's defense stepped up again as the Rams collected their third pick of the game, this time by Daron Allman who returns it 16-yards to end UTPB's drive. Defensively, the Rams also collected nine sacks in the game with three coming from O'Shea Jacksonand two more from Allman.

 

After a pass interference call on the Falcons put the ball on the five-yard line, Bronkhorst picked up his second touchdown pass of the game, hitting Drew Carstens in the end zone. Bronkhorst finished with 325 passing yards on 22 completions while collecting two touchdowns with no interceptions.

 

Kyle Bradford and Noah Massey led the receiving core for ASU, both collecting four passes for 78 yards and 70 yards respectively.

 

Amieh Williams was the leading tackler for the Rams, finishing the game with eight total tackles including seven solo followed by Flowers with six and Allman and Eric Rascoe with five.

 

The Rams will return home next weekend as they host an important LSC game against West Texas A&M on Saturday, September 24.
