Description

SAN ANGELO, TX —San Angelo had a good weekend with not only the Bobcats getting a win over Belton on Friday night, but the Lake View Chiefs played up a classification — 4A Lake View challenged a 5A Lubbock — and had a big win over the Westerners.

The Lake View Chiefs played in Lubbock on Thursday and improved to 3-1 on the season by beating the Westerners 35-21. Through the air, Lake View went 9-18 for 91 yards and a touchdown and had 43 carries for 284 yards on the ground. The Chiefs also had four rushing touchdowns.

As the first quarter came to an end, Derrick Taylor grabbed an 18-yard touchdown pass from Esaias Salazar. After an Elijah Stone kick, the score was tied 7-7 at the end of one. In the second frame, Lake View faced a seven-point deficit and with 5 minutes left before the half, running back Ian Cortez ran in a short touchdown to tie the game 14-14.

Under two minutes, Cortez would score again to put the Chiefs up 21-14 before going in for halftime.

In the second half, Westerner running back Trini Tijerina took a 14-yard pass for a score with about 9 minutes in the third left. Lake View would answer about two minutes later when the other half of Lake View’s two-headed monster, Ricky Ramirez, would take the rock 20-yards for a touchdown. Heading into the fourth, the score was 28-21 with the Chiefs in the lead.

The Chiefs would take the lone fourth quarter score with a Noah Rios 5-yard run in the closing minutes of the game. That would put Lake View up 35-21 with under a minute left in the game and the Chiefs defeated the 5A Westerners.

The Chiefs' running game owned the night with both Cortez and Ramirez leading the way with a combined 205 yards and three touchdowns. Lake View receiver Taylor took five catches for 85 yards and a score.

The Chiefs defense snagged another interception, giving them eight on the season.

Next week, Lake View travels to Levelland to take on the 0-4 Lobos and have a really good chance of going 4-1.

Friday night, San Angelo CentralBobcat quarterback Tyler Hill performed well against the Belton Tigers on the ground where he ripped off several long scoring runs. The Bobcat defense stepped up in a big way. Central’s defense snagged a couple of turnovers and held Belton to 12 points with a final score of 35-12. See more analysis and highlights here.
